‘Never mind,’ my Mum said, in a quivery voice, as she gazed out of the window at the clouds rolling over. ‘It’s good luck!’

I didn’t care. It could have poured down all day if it wanted to. (Which it did.)

I was twenty, and I was getting married. I’d never been so sure of anything in my life.’

As an introverted teenager grappling with (I realise when I look back) incredible ups and downs in my mental health and feeling constantly under pressure to fit in and to succeed — I couldn’t have had enough of those. Really, those fantasy worlds kept me sane. They gave me something to hold onto. A portal into another place, to think of and ponder about when the real world seemed a bit ridiculous or scary to me.’
